From musical icon to airport? That's what one congressman says should be done to honor the legacy of Isaac Hayes. Steve Cohen asked the audience at Hayes' funeral what it would be like to fly into Memphis and be told you are about to land at Isaac Hayes International Airport. The remark drew a large burst of applause. And Cohen says he isn't playing about the level of honor that should be accorded Hayes. He says the city should celebrate Hayes the same way it does Elvis Presley. Cohen added that Hayes: "is a world person who the world will miss." Some 3,000 family, friends and fans were on hand for the service. Among those on hand for the funeral yesterday were Richard Roundtree, who starred in the title role of the 1971 movie "Shaft." It was Hayes' composition of the theme and other music for the film that earned him both an Oscar and a Grammy -- and catapulted him to fame. There was a private service on Sunday, which was attended by Denzel Washington, Wesley Snipes and Tom Cruise. Isaac Hayes died a week ago Sunday, after he was found unconscious at his home in Memphis. His family doctor lists the cause of death as a stroke.
Laurence Fishburne is headed for the scene of the crime. He has been named to take over a key role in "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation." He will replace William Petersen, who is leaving the show. The network says Fishburne will play a forensics scientists with a secret -- and will make his first official appearance in the ninth episode of the show's 10th season. In a statement, Fishburne says he is "elated and delighted" to join the CSI cast. The air date for Petersen's final episode hasn't been set, but the network says it will be early next year. Petersen has been with the show since it made its debut in the fall of 2000. Laurence Fishburne is 47. He got an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Ike Turner in 1993's "What's Love Got to Do With It." And he won a Tony in 1992 for "Two Trains Running." He got another Tony nod this year for the one-man show, "Thurgood," a play about Thurgood Marshall, the first black to sit on the U.S. Supreme Court. Fishburne's other movie credits include the "Matrix" films, "The Color Purple" and "Akeelah and the Bee."
The City Council in Detroit may feel they have the grounds to get rid of Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. But a judge in the motor city has ruled the council doesn't have the power to do so. The ruling by a Wayne County Circuit judge represents a rare victory in court for Kilpatrick. He stands charged with perjury, misconduct, obstruction of justice and assault. And the decision that the city council can't oust him is no guarantee he'll get to stay in office. He still could be removed from through a September 3rd misconduct hearing over which Michigan's governor is to preside.
